El Guapo is a seasonally brewed beer from Intuition Ale Works that has been around for a while. In 2019 it was decided that a short run of cans would be available for these seasonal beers and they would need individual brands and artwork for the cans.
The first iteration of the El Guapo can was printed on a plastic wrap and shrunk to the cans. This provided the space to mimic the look of the core cans with colored bands at the top and bottom of the design, but also limited the design to flat, 4-color artwork.
By the time the second round of cans were ready for production, the process had shifted to an application of metallic labels. The nature of the substrate allows for printing a white layer below the artwork which also provides an opportunity to contrast matte with metallic elements in the final product. I think the result is beautifully contrasted colors and finishes that set this apart from the other options on the shelf.
